What are Vitamins?
Vitamins
- organic nutrients = carbon containing nutrients
- required in small quantities for various of biochemical functions (such as: coenzymes, metabolic regulators, hormones and etc.)
- generally, cannot be synthesized by the body and must therefore be supplied by the diet
- do not produce energy (no calories) but involved in extracting energy from macronutrients (such as: CHOs, CHONs, lipids and nucleic acids)
Classification of Vitamins
Vitamins are classified as either fat soluble or water soluble. It determines how each vitamin acts within the body.
